Hello District 12 Zontians!
Fall is in the air, and District 12 is in full swing in planning the
District 12 Conference. Our theme this year is "HERstory of
Heroes." The location is beautiful Boulder, CO from September 25-27,
2015.
- Our Zonta International board liaison, Sharon
Langenbeck, will be joining us. She is our "featured lunch
speaker" on Saturday. Coming from California and a past Amelia
Earhart fellow, she is excited to join us again! (She visited us
in January, 2015 for the Area 3 meeting / Amelia Earhart luncheon.)
- The program is a fun and engaging. In addition to
completing Zonta business and the electing your future District leaders,
you will have a chance to:
- Tell us about "your hero" (Friday evening Trivia event & dress-up & throughout the conference.)
- "Honor your Club Heroes" (Zontias of the Year) and
"Celebrating our Super Heroes (Length of Zonta membership) during the
award ceremony Saturday evening!
- "Remembering our Heroes" at the Sunday morning Memorial Service.
- "Recognizing our Future Heroes" during Sunday Brunch (Z Clubs), and of course...
- "Becoming a Club Hero" by attend the event *
learning
about Zonta through the sessions, club workshops and networking with
others from Montana, South Dakota, Colorado, and Wyoming!

In addition to all the activity in planning the fall conference, the District leadership team has been active!
- Thank you to the following people for taking roles with the District leadership team.
- Pam Malzbender for the External Public Relations and Communications chair.
- Carolyn White for stepping into the Vice Director role for Area 2, and
- Kay Meyer for adding the District Advocacy Chairman responsibility to her Centurian role!
- Completed officer leadership training for President's
& Vice Presidents, Treasurers, Secretaries, and the Club
boards. All training was held during June and July. Since we
were unable to get everyone covered, we plan follow-up training in
October/November! If you didn't have a chance to attend, please
do!
- Held the District Leadership team meeting in June, 2015. All reports are available on the D12 website.
- Attended the North American Interdistrict meeting in
Minneapolis, MN from June 12 * 14th. There were excellent workshops. All the Powerpoint presentations are available on the International website (www.zonta.org).
Upcoming events this fall include:
- Planning for a District 12 Advocacy event in the Denver
area (October 14 - 16th)

- Rolling out the District 12 Service Project, which
includes each club engaging in Zonta "Silent Witness" during the months

It is hard to realize that the time remaining in this biennium is less
than a year. My focus will be to increase club visits (don't
forget to invite me to your club or board meeting) and to continue with
the good work that we Zontians do!

 Hello District 12 Zontians!
This year's District 12 Conference will be held September 25 - 27 at the
Millennium Harvest House Hotel in Boulder, Colorado, hosted by the
Zonta Foothills Club of Boulder County and the Zonta Club of Boulder
County. All District 12 Zontians are invited to attend!
The theme for this year's conference is "HERstory of Heroes". The
theme will highlight women's contributions throughout history through
"her stories." It was selected because we all have women we look up to
(our heroes) throughout our lives. In fact, your "hero" may change.....
- from your "favorite teacher" when you are 10 years old, to.....
- a "impactful professor" when you are 20, to...
- a "instrumental boss" in your 30's or 40's as you are migrating through your career, to....
- a "smart, charismatic women who might be your friend or colleague" later in life.
All have a demonstrated Conviction, Commitment and Courage. Think about your "hero" and bring "HERstory" with you to the Conference.

Area 1
Teresa Forbes, Area 1 Director
The Zonta Club of Pierre-Ft. Pierre will be celebrating its 60th
Anniversary this year. We were surprised and pleased to be offered the
opportunity to decorate the feature tree for the Capitol Christmas
Celebration here in Pierre. The tree will be about 35 feet high and will
be in the rotunda. It will be a wonderful opportunity to let people
know about Zonta's mission!
This
year's theme for the Capitol Christmas Celebration is "Christmas Around
the World." This will be a wonderful fit with Zonta! The Pierre-Ft.
Pierre club is planning to decorate the tree with large yellow roses and
flags from countries that have Zonta Clubs. We are also planning to
hang shoes from the tree to represent women and walking away from
violence. But, we could use your help! We invite your club to send
ornaments for the tree that are representative of your club. It can be
lightweight for shipping purposes. We are asking that it be 8in x 8in
(20cm x 20cm) up to 12in x 12in (30cm x 30cm) in size. Unfortunately we
will not be able to return what you send, so please don't send anything
you need returned.

Area 2
Michelle Ammerman, Area 2 Director
Area
2 continues to the home of Zonta movers and shakers in Colorado and
Wyoming. New ideas and accomplishments continue to grow and the clubs
are always willing to help each other with new initiatives. New ideas
for fundraisers and activities are awakening members in all of the clubs
and I encourage you to reach out to other club members to find out
what is working and to collaborate.
A
big accomplishment that I want to recognize is the Laramie High School Z
Club who won the 2015 International Emma L. Conlon award. There
are only three of these awards presented for Z and Golden Z clubs so
this is an incredible story of success. Congratulations!
Club Membership numbers as of June 1st are as follows:

Remember,
as we work to recruit and retain, never be afraid to go back to the
well. Our "Hole in your Bucket" training is still available on the
District 12 web site and is a great resource.
While
I continue to support the team from 1700 miles of distance, please
don't ever hesitate to reach out to me across the miles. My new
number is 980-210-2450.
I will be restarting our monthly President conference calls at a time
that works for everyone. The time zone change had presented some
problems for me but we will work through them.
Here's to a great new year with many new adventures and positive changes resulting from the work of our Area 2 Zontians!

Area 3 Director
Ann Hodgson
The Area 3 clubs are continuing to look for projects we can do together:
- All clubs participated in the "Women Powering Change"
expo in Denver July 9. This was an opportunity for
organizations to offer information to women interesting in becoming part
of a force for change. We used our Booth in a Box, the D12 roll
up banner, and items from out Zonta Says No event to decorate our
tables. Each club had their brochures there and people who came by
the table were encouraged to leave their contact information.
Mary Benoit coordinated the club's participation.
- We discussed potential Area 3 service projects and
are very interested in the Days for Girls sanitary kits. These are
kits of absorbent cloth pads, moisture barrier shield, panties, soap,
and washcloth all in a colorful drawstring bag. Judy Allen
volunteered to try sewing the items and let us know the effort
involved. Carol said there is a local chapter of the organization
and she will look into how to handle the donations.
- We also discussed what to do as an Area for Zonta Says
No. We focused on increasing awareness of the issue and will look
into a sign on the back or side of a bus. Debbie Squires will look
into this for us. We could use pictures of groups with the bus on
social media.
Clubs have volunteered for jobs for the D12 Conference in Boulder, September 25-27 this fall:
- Lakewood/Golden will provide a scholarship raffle basket (and handle the raffle)
- Denver will work with Renee on the Sunday memorial service
- Douglas will handle a trivia bowl for the Friday night social
- Denver II will provide table decorations for the Saturday night banquet

Area 4
Linda Hawkins, Area 4 Director
Greetings
from Area 4. I would like to start by saying that area 4 is
blessed to have amazing clubs with outstanding women who are
making a difference in their communities.
Royal
Gorge is always active in their part of the world and are gearing up to
do their first Girls Night Out. I know it will be a great success
as they always make their projects great.
Pikes
Peak is having a booth, and using the booth in a box, for two events
coming up in their city. One is Foxy Ladies and the other is The
Human Trafficking Task Force Symposium. Way to go Ladies on getting
Zonta's name out to the public.
Prowers
County just held a successful membership night and it looks like they
will be adding 3 to 4 new members. They have also added 2 new service
projects. One is teaching Life Skills to women in our community and the
other is hosting a political forum for candidates in October. They held
their first Girls Night Out in March and are willing to give any help
Royal Gorge might need. Prowers County was fortunate to have a member
who had a event center that they donated - thanks, Diane Woller.
I am so proud of Area 4. Hope to see you all at conference in September!

Sixty years as a Zontian
Beverly
Augustine celebrates her sixtieth year as a member of the Zonta Club of
Prowers County in Southeastern Colorado this December. Augustine, who
had just opened her dress shop, The Lassie, in 1948, was not among the
members who chartered the club in 1949. She cites charter member Ruth
Reyher's persistence as one of the reasons she joined in December of
1955. Augustine, a native of Michigan and an alumni of Northwestern
University in Evanston, Illinois is an exemplar Zontian. As a club
member, Beverly continues to chair committees. Augustine believes she
has filled just about every position at the club, area, and district
level. She represented District 12 as Governor from 1966-68 and chaired
Zonta International Membership, Service and International Hostess
Committees. Among the many wonderful memories she has of her long tenure
as a Zontian are the numerous Zonta International Conventions she
attended and the relationships she developed with fellow Zontians. In
addition to her active participation in Zonta, Augustine continues to
operate The Lassie.

A review of membership
Renee Coppock, Lt. Governor
It seems that summer just started, but the calendar says it's August.
Where did all that time go? After the brief break that many clubs take
during the summer, we will start our Membership Team telephone
conferences again. The next call will be September 15, 2015, at 6:00
p.m., MDT. I will send a call-in number to the Vice Area Directors and
all club Presidents.
I hope to see many of you at the D12 Conference in Boulder. Cindy
Phillips from the ZI Membership Committee will be leading a panel
discussion on membership, focusing on the recruiting and retaining
younger members. The discussion is essential to the health and vitality
of our clubs, so I encourage all of you to attend. The deadline
for determining how many delegates each club has for voting at the D12
Conference is September 1 - make sure you have dues paid for all members
PRIOR to September 1, or the member will not be counted for determining
the club's delegates. With the last amendments to the ZI Bylaws, clubs
with 30 or fewer members are entitled to 1 delegate, clubs with 31 to 60
have 2 delegates, and clubs with over 60 are entitled to 3 delegates.
Congratulations once again to the Zonta Club of the Black Hills, which
received recognition from ZI for the Club's membership activities. Given
the fact that the Club has a proven track record for recruitment, the
Zonta Club of Black Hills has been chosen to help lead the charge in
forming our e-club. So far, we have 7 women from all over the country
committed to joining the e-club. If any of you know some dynamic women
who would like to join our e-club, please send me the contact
information. According to the new ZI rules, we need 15 committed members
to charter the club. Our goal is to have the members in place before
the end of the year. We can't do this without the commitment of every
club in the District.

Zonta International Service Awards
Ann Hefenieder, District 12 Service Chair
Zonta International Service Recognition Awards 2014-2016
ZI will recognize both individual club and District
projects at the ZI Convention in July, 2016 in Nice, France. The
e-mailed nomination form, photo and explanation (200 words or less) for
club service projects is due to Governor Marcy by December 29, 2015. The
award guidelines and report criteria can be found at http://www.zonta.org/ClubsLeadership/Tools/ServiceTools.aspx
The District Project proposed by Governor Marcy combines the strengths
of both service and advocacy. The Zonta District 12 "You Are Remembered"
Campaign will feature Zonta clubs exhibiting life-size silhouettes.
Those clubs already participating in a "Silent Witness" event know how
powerful the silhouettes can be. Each silhouette represents a woman or
girl whose life was ended as a result of gender-based violence.
Templates for the silhouette will be provided to each club at the
District Conference in Boulder, CO September 25th-27th. It is meaningful
to include the names and stories of women/girls who are local victims
of violence on the silhouettes. This will require some local research
for Clubs.
The objectives of the Initiative are:
1. To remember -- by honoring women and
girls whose lives were ended as a result of gender-based violence.
2. To create awareness -- by sharing
information in our communities about the root causes of gender violence,
and the effects of it on communities.
3. To promote action -- by encouraging
community and government action to end all forms of violence in our
society.
Each club should schedule their district project event during the "16
Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women," November 25, 2015
through December 10, 2015, except that clubs which already participate
annually in a "Silent Witness" campaign at some other time should
continue with that participation, and add an advocacy event "You Are
Remembered" during the 16 Days. A Power Point presentation will be
available to clubs to use at the event.
Each club must submit its report of the district project electronically
by January 10, 2016 to the Governor. The report should include photos
and press clippings. The project report must also mention the visibility
it has given to ZI. Reports should explain the benefit to women/girls
in the local community, and opine on the sustainability of the event.
The same criteria will be used to judge individual club service
projects.

Kathy Hyzer
District 12 JMK Coordinator
I am pleased to announce the winner of the 2015 District 12 Jane M Klausman Scholarship.
Edit Maszlaver graduated magna cum laude from Metro State University of
Denver last spring and is currently working toward her Master's degree
in Professional Accountancy, emphasizing international taxation. Her
goal after graduation in December 2015 is to work towards her CPA
designation. Edit wants to help businesses grow their businesses
internationally. This includes knowledge about foreign markets, currency
transactions, foreign government standards and accounting
standards.
Edit Maszlaver, D12 JKM Winner
Edit grew up in an Eastern European country, Hungary, and is still
active with the Hungarian Society in Colorado. She also financed her
education while working full time and raising two teenage children as a
single parent. Edit stated, "Receiving the scholarship and not being
deep in debt will allow me to choose an assignment not purely based on
financial consideration, but based on usefulness to society, and that is
something truly important to me."
One of Edit's professors at Metro State University of Denver stated in
his recommendation: "Edit is an extremely intelligent, articulate and
well-mannered individual. She is also a critical and analytical thinker,
and able to express her ideas clearly. In summary, Edit has the
potential to go far in the accounting field. In fact, she is one of the
best students I have ever had the pleasure to teach."
In addition to the scholarship that she
received from the Zonta Club of Denver, Edit will be presented with the
District 12 Scholarship of $1500 ($1000 from International and $500 from
District) at a future event. Her application will be sent to
International, and hopefully she will also receive one of the 12
International JMK Scholarships. Many thanks to the judges, Ann
Hefenieder, Kathy Swofford, and Suzanne Fasing for their hard work in
evaluating the outstanding applications that we received.

Forming a Z or Golden Z Club

Zonta International Emma L. Conlon Award
First Place - Laramie High School Z Club
District 12 is pleased to recognize the Laramie High School Z Club for
its First Place showing in the 2015 Emma L. Conlon Award. To win this
international competition, the Z Club must have participated in three
outstanding school service projects, three impressive community service
projects, and extraordinary international service projects. Laramie's
club had all of these.
For school service projects, the Z Club developed a "Power Hour" program
designed to encourage girls of all ages to stay involved with sports.
This program introduced young girls to high school role models who are
athletes, to reinforce the idea of team unity for girls in sports and
give them insight to the importance of sports in the lives of the Z Club
members. They also put on a free self defense class for girls in the
High School. The project was used as a platform to bring awareness to
Violence Against Women and to provide education to help ladies defend
themselves if they ever need to do so. They also delivered a
presentation on Amelia Earhart in the High School and to the Zonta Club
of Laramie.
Community Service projects included participation in the Silent Witness:
Fight Against Domestic Violence program in Laramie. The girls set-up
and took down the event, which included a candlelight vigil march and
the "Silent Witnesses" - which are silhouettes of women who have died in
domestic violence events whose stories were shared at the event. The
club also hosted a baby shower for the SAFE Project of Albany County.
The SAFE Project is a group that supports victims of all types of
domestic violence and abuse through services and attempts to bring
education and awareness to the Laramie community in an effort to end
violence. They also participated in "Safe Treat" which is a downtown
Laramie Halloween event designed to give children and their parents a
safe environment to celebrate Halloween.
The Z Club also participated in three International projects. The club
participated as a team for the Days for Girls Project to provide
reusable feminine supplies to women who do not have access to them in
more than 60 countries around the world. The Days for Girls organization
is a well established program created to provide kits of hygiene
supplies to women so they can continue to go to school/work through
their menstrual cycles instead of missing that time. They also became
involved with the Cupcakes for Cambodia and Heart Mothers Project and
specifically Ruth Williams, a Laramie woman, who is working to raise
money for her project that help girls in Cambodia who have been rescued
from human trafficking. The girls sold bracelets made by the victims and
sent the proceeds back to the program. Finally, the Z Club advertised,
sold, prepared and delivered roses for Zonta's Rose Day to help raise
awareness about International Women's Day in March.
The Z Club was advised by Tamara Bretting and Jennica Fournier, who are
both Zontians and High School science teachers at Laramie High School.
These two amazing young women were also selected as the Zonta Club of
Laramie's Zontians of the Year.

District 12 Ameila Earhart Chair
It's
been an exciting 2 years for Amelia Earhart fellowships. In January we
celebrated 3 fellows doing research and studying for their Phd, in
aeronautical engineering. Holly Borowski, Christine Fanchiang, and
Juliana Feldhacker, all are at University of Colorado, Boulder. Each
women is studying a different field within Aeronautical Engineering and
it was fascinating to hear their stories. We celebrated their
successes with an AE Luncheon at the Museum of History and Science in
Denver.
This
Year we are once again happy to have yet another fellow at CU Denver.
Clemence Bacquet is from France and we are very excited that she will
attending our next luncheon in January. Clemence is doing exciting work
in Aeronautical Engineering and will be a fascinating speaker. She is
also attending University of Colorado, Boulder.
District
12 has been very fortunate to have had so many fellows in the past
attending the University of Colorado. We look forward to meeting many
more.

North American Inter-District Meeting
Several dynamic women from District 12 met in Minneapolis with other
Zontians from North America from June 12-14. Along with Governor Marcy
and me, Past Governor Judy Allen, ZI Treasurer Bridget Masters, and
Greeley member, Kathy Swafford attended. The agenda was packed with
training opportunities and informative sessions. The Zonta International
Board was also in attendance, making this a fabulous opportunity to
speak with the Board members on a one-on-one basis, without the stress
of Convention. The Board members I spoke with are well aware of the many
activities and projects that occur in District 12. Vice President
Suzanne von Bassewitz was particularly excited about service and
advocacy opportunities in North America. You may recall that she was the
brain power behind the Zona Says No campaign.
Marcy and I were to start the weekend in a day long membership meeting,
lead by the ZI Membership Task Force. While I was fortunate enough to
attend the meeting, United Airlines had other plans for Marcy (but that
is another story....) Governors and Lieutenant Governors from all over
North America met with the Task Force to address declining Zonta
membership in North America. We looked at the root causes of the decline
and addressed strategies to reverse the trend. It was a great
opportunity to see how other districts are dealing with membership
issues. What became evident is that most clubs in North America are so
focused on fundraising and service, that they often forget about
retaining their members, which also leads to recruitment issues. In
Europe and Asia, the focus is much more on networking and membership.
Club meetings in these areas often involve a well-known, professional
speaker, which helps draw many people, not just Zontians, to meetings.
This has given those Zonta clubs a level of prestige that most clubs in
North America have not attained. It was very interesting to hear the
different perspectives.
While we were tackling membership, there were three leadership
development training opportunities members could attend. These sessions
focused on in-depth training, rather than the usual handout and speech.
The meeting was then formally opened by ZI President Maria Jose Landeira
Oestergaard, followed by President-Elect Sonja Honnig Schough speaking
about the Membership Task Force and the continued plans to increase
membership around the world. We had the opportunity to attend round
table discussions revolving around the different ZI committees, with a
ZI representative at each table. One table featured our very own Bridget
Masters, speaking on finance.
The sessions during the weekend included topics in leading in Advocacy,
Service, Governance, and Fundraising. During each time period, you could
choose to attend a session in any one of the areas. The ones I attended
were very informative and interactive, and some of the best training I
have seen at a Zonta event. The presenters all seemed very knowledgeable
and enthusiastic about the topics. Copies of the materials can be found

I would encourage all clubs in our district to budget sending a member
to this meeting. This is not only a fabulous opportunity for training,
but also for networking and connecting with other Zontians in North
America. The next NAIDM will be in June, 2017, in the Washington, D.C.
area.

Update from your Bylaws chair

Proposed changes to international bylaws and policies and procedure manual
A. Policies and Procedure Manual (P&P Manual)
When you review the redline version of the P&P manual, the
first thing you will notice is there are many changes that don't affect
the language of the manual. The P&P manual had been through
many revisions with many authors so the formatting was inconsistent
through the document, and editing was difficult. The document has
now been completely reformatted so the headings and paragraph numbers
work and the fonts are all consistent.
These are the main changes to the substance of the P&P manual:
- Section II, B, 3, d was added to provide for the appointment of a vice area director in the case of vacancy.
- Section IV, E, 1, b was clarified to provide that delegates and board members must be present to vote.
- Section IV, E, 1, g and h were rewritten to provide a framework for nominations from the floor.
- Section IV, H, 2, f was rewritten to clarify the requirements for clubs to win the Service Award.
- Section XI was added to provide guidance for the district and clubs upon the death of a Zontian.
There are also some language changes to bring the P&P manual into
alignment with the international bylaws, and a small change to Section
VIII, D, 7 to allow the board more flexibility in paying for Board
member expenses at the District Conference.
B. International Bylaw Proposal
We would like to propose a change to the Zonta International Bylaws to
allow a Zontian to serve as Area Director more than once.
Currently, the ZI Bylaws do not allow anyone to serve as Area Director
who has held that office in the past. The proposed change would
allow for former Area Directors to be nominated for that post again
after six years out of office.

D12 Advocacy/UN Committee Goals for 2015-16:
- Provide up-to-date information regarding issues and legislation relating to women's rights, health, safety, and opportunity.
- Include an Advocacy article in each D12 Outreach Newsletter.
- Provide information on relevant legislation (proposed
& passed) occurring in each of 4 states to the clubs in relevant
state.
- Update the Advocacy & UN sections of the District 12 website with pictures, new information, letter templates, etc.
- Provide up-to-date information regarding the UN, Beijing+20, Post-2015 Agenda, and CEDAW within the District & for all clubs
- Provide an Advocacy/UN related presentation at all Area Meetings in 2016.
- Provide info to enable each club to have a least 1 program per year on Zonta's role with the UN.
- Committee members act as advocacy resource persons within their own states.
- Encourage each club to take action (that has measureable
impact) on at least one advocacy issue, promote such action in the local
media, and report on the results to the Governor and to Zonta
International.
- Participate in the Zonta says No to Violence Against Women' initiative in some manner.
- Initiate advocacy actions in cooperation with like-minded organizations when possible/relevant.
- Select Club winner of District Advocacy Award, using
defined selection criteria & club reports, to be awarded at the 2015
District Conference.
